UNESCO World Heritage Site
Simply more beauty.
Imposing mountain ranges, rustic valleys and the largest contiguous glaciated area in the Alps - for UNESCO it was clear: this is a World Heritage Site of universal value. The Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch are one of the most spectacular high mountain landscapes. They are in symbiosis with the surrounding cultural landscape and extend across all levels of vegetation from Mediterranean-like steppe to barren high mountains.
The Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site is the first natural heritage site in Switzerland and the entire Alpine region. The area around the Jungfrau and the Great Aletsch Glacier was declared the first natural heritage site in the Alps by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2001 because the grandiose mountain landscape fulfilled the required criteria of the World Heritage Committee in a special way: Diversity, beauty, uniqueness.
Of the total 828 km² UNESCO area, 414 km² of unmistakable landscape awaits you in Valais, shining with exceptional grace and ecological diversity, just waiting to be discovered and marveled at.
This area is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it is also an excellent source of information about the formation of mountains and glaciers as well as current climate change.
